The play The Taming of a Dream Weaver merges performing arts and technology. Driven by 18 Taiwanese students and two professors from National Central University, this trilingual production explores AI creativity and the delicate balance between tradition and modernity.
The « I-Bridities » project and its play The Taming of a Dream Weaver is an innovative initiative. Centering on hybridity, the project lives up to its name as it stems from a collaboration between the Department of Optics and Photonics and the Department of French at National Central University, Taiwan. The play brings together disciplines that rarely collaborate, just as the participating students come from diverse academic backgrounds.
Among them are 13 undergraduate students from the interdisciplinary course « Optical Art and Artificial Intelligence » and five members of the university’s theater club, Theater Together. Whether newcomers to performing arts or more experienced in the field, they succeeded—under the guidance of professors Chii-Chang Chen and Nicolas Drouet—in pooling their knowledge. Together, they took on roles as actors and crew to create a fully hybrid production combining technology and artistic performance.
By integrating artificial intelligence into its creative process, this project questions the role of technology in our lives and introduces fresh ideas to the arts. This hybrid and innovative approach addresses contemporary issues raised by technologies while intertwining them with cultural heritage. The encounter between modernity and tradition mirrors the hybrid nature of the project, where technologies coexist with cultural references.
A Meeting of Cultures and AI
The play The Taming of a Dream Weaver exemplifies the new challenges posed by artificial intelligence in the cultural field, particularly in theatrical art. Through this project, the Taiwanese students present a multicultural work blending French and Chinese influences while exploring the relationship between humans and technology.
This production can be seen as a cultural dialogue, intertwining Chinese and French, two languages with vastly different roots. Supported by the French Institute and the French Office in Taipei, the initiative promotes learning and artistic expression in French, a language relatively unfamiliar to Taiwanese students. Thus, this isn’t merely a fusion of humans and machines, but also an exchange of cultures and traditions.
The curious collaboration between AI and students takes shape through text fragments and projected images. This innovative method expands the realm of possibilities through the limitless imagination and creativity of AI, sparking both admiration and apprehension for this emerging technology.
The contradictions at the heart of the play—human/machine, human/animal, actor/spectator—are heightened by its reference to Rhinoceros by Eugène Ionesco, adapted for the age of algorithms and artificial intelligence. This intersection of tradition and modernity is reflected in the title The Taming of a Dream Weaver, which blends cultural references such as Shakespeare’s works and Ionesco’s plays. The production invites us to question the role of technology in shaping our identities and communication. Ultimately, it reflects society and raises awareness about the impact of technology on our lives. At the same time, it shows that technology can be a valuable tool in the arts to reimagine classic works.
Artificial Intelligence: Cultural Revolution or “Threat” to Humanity?
Integrating AI into the play opens the door to profound reflections on the role of technology in art. Balancing fascination and apprehension, AI disrupts traditional cultural norms and prompts us to rethink our approach to creation.
The play doesn’t merely use AI as a tool; it elevates it to the status of a true protagonist and co-creator. The AI-generated texts and projected images are not mere stage props but integral narrative elements that enrich the story. This human-machine collaboration pushes the boundaries of imagination and offers new artistic perspectives.
Echoing Eugène Ionesco’s Rhinoceros, the play highlights the risks of dehumanization and cultural identity loss in the face of advancing technology.
AI’s impact on culture is twofold. On one hand, it offers unprecedented opportunities, pushing the limits of creativity. On the other, it raises concerns about humanity’s place in an increasingly automated world. The Taming of a Dream Weaver urges us to find balance, using AI as a means to enrich our cultural heritage without losing what makes us human.

La pièce Le songe d’une Mélangère apprivoisée fusionne arts du spectacle et technologie. Portée par 18 étudiants taïwanais et deux enseignants de l’Université Nationale Centrale, cette œuvre trilingue explore la créativité de l’IA et le fragile équilibre entre tradition et modernité.
Le projet « I-bridités » et sa pièce Le songe d’une Mélangère apprivoisée est une initiative innovante. Plaçant l’hybridité au centre, ce projet porte bien son nom puisqu’il est né d’une collaboration entre le département d’optique-photonique et le département français de National Central University (l’Université Nationale Centrale de Taïwan). Cette pièce mélange donc plusieurs disciplines que l’on aurait difficilement imaginées collaborer, tout comme les étudiants de parcours académiques variés.
Parmi eux, 13 étudiants de licence du cours interdisciplinaire “Art optique et Intelligence Artificielle” et 5 étudiants de l’association théâtrale de l’université : Theater Together. Malgré des niveaux d’expériences différents, débutants ou confirmés, les participants ont collaboré grâce à l’encadrement de Chii-Chang Chen et Nicolas Drouet. Ensemble, les étudiants ont occupé divers rôles, acteurs ou techniciens, pour créer une pièce hybride alliant technologie et performance artistique.
En intégrant l’intelligence artificielle dans son processus de création, ce projet questionne le rôle de la technologie dans nos vies et ouvre de nouvelles idées dans le domaine artistique. Ce mélange hybride et innovant permet alors de traiter des enjeux contemporains soulevés par les technologies, tout en se mêlant à la culture. Cette rencontre entre modernité et tradition reflète l’hybridation du projet où les technologies coexistent avec les références culturelles.
Rencontre entre culture et IA
La pièce de théâtre Le songe d’une Mélangère apprivoisée illustre parfaitement les nouveaux enjeux de l’intelligence artificielle dans le domaine culturel, et plus précisément dans l’art théâtral. En effet, les étudiants taiwanais nous offrent une œuvre multiculturelle, mêlant la France et Taïwan, tout en interrogeant la relation entre l’humain et la technologie.
Cette pièce peut être qualifiée de dialogue culturel, mêlant le chinois, le français et l’anglais. Soutenue par l’Institut Français et le Bureau Français de Taipei, cette initiative valorise l’apprentissage et l’expression artistique en français, une langue peu familière pour les étudiants taiwanais. Ce n’est donc pas qu’une simple fusion entre l’humain et les machines, mais un échange de cultures et traditions.
La curieuse collaboration entre l’IA et les étudiants prend la forme de parties de textes et d’images projetées. Cette approche élargit ainsi le champ des possibles grâce à l’imagination et la créativité infinie de l’IA, suscitant un mélange d’admiration et de crainte face à cette technologie émergente.

Les textes générés et les images projetées par l’intelligence artificielle ne sont pas de simples accessoires scéniques, mais des éléments narratifs à part entière qui enrichissent le récit. Cette collaboration homme-machine repousse les limites de l’imagination et ouvre de nouvelles perspectives artistiques.
En faisant écho à Rhinocéros d’Eugène Ionesco, la pièce met en lumière le risque de déshumanisation et la perte d’identité culturelle face à la montée en puissance de la technologie.
L’impact de l’IA sur la culture est donc double. D’un côté, elle offre des opportunités inédites, permettant de repousser les frontières de la créativité. De l’autre, elle suscite des inquiétudes quant à la place de l’humain dans un monde de plus en plus automatisé. Le songe d’une Mélangère apprivoisée nous invite ainsi à trouver un équilibre, à utiliser l’IA comme un moyen d’enrichir notre patrimoine culturel sans renoncer à ce qui fait notre humanité.
