A Hybrid Project at the Intersection of Disciplines<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In Taoyuan, northern Taiwan, National Central University launched an unprecedented project, combining scientific, literary, and artistic disciplines<\/strong>. Conceived as part of the course \u201cArtificial Intelligence and Optical Art,\u201d <\/strong>the initiative brought together about 15 students from various university departments. Under the guidance of Nicolas Drouet<\/strong>, a French professor, and Chii-Chang Chen<\/strong>, a photonics professor, the participants explored human-machine interactions through an original theatrical work<\/strong>. A fitting prelude to this unique venture: the two professors met during a French song contest at the 2023 F\u00eate de la Musique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The play, titled The Dream of a Tamed M\u00e9lang\u00e8re,<\/em><\/strong> draws inspiration from Eug\u00e8ne Ionesco\u2019s Rhinoceros<\/strong>, reimagined for an era dominated by algorithms and artificial intelligence.<\/strong> M\u00e9lang\u00e8re, the protagonist, questions humanity in a world where otherness fades amidst the complexities of technology<\/strong>. This storyline provided the foundation for a groundbreaking educational experiment, incorporating three languages\u2014Mandarin, English, and French\u2014both in the creative process and on stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning French Differently : An Immersive Challenge<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Dream of a Tamed M\u00e9lang\u00e8re<\/em><\/strong> offered a unique opportunity for students, for whom learning French was not initially a priority, to dive into the language. The trilingual interdisciplinary course<\/strong> (French, Mandarin, English) required no prior French proficiency to participate. Yet some students, like Shan (\u5584\u7b60)<\/strong>, enthusiastically rose to the challenge, performing dialogues in French despite having never spoken or heard the language before. Supported by classmates and two French Master\u2019s students in Foreign Language Teaching, Shan (\u5584\u7b60)<\/strong><\/strong> tirelessly rehearsed her lines, memorizing them phonetically,<\/strong> often without immediately understanding their meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Dominique (\u660c\u5fb7),<\/strong> an experienced French learner who acted as an interpreter during interviews, the project was an opportunity to refine his skills, particularly through translating dialogues and creating subtitles. This demanding task required navigating humor, wordplay, and cultural nuances, all while using AI tools to fine-tune the translations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conversely, beginners like Vincent (\u660e\u7199)<\/strong> expressed their delight at discovering simple yet symbolic phrases like \u201cje t\u2019aime\u201d (\u201cI love you\u201d), delivered with a broad smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond acting, the project engaged a student team in translating the script, initially written in French. This collaborative effort<\/strong> between French, English, and Mandarin demanded a deep understanding of linguistic and cultural subtleties<\/strong>. With AI assistance<\/strong>, students sought poetic and humorous equivalents to convey wordplay and cultural references in Mandarin. Their success, blending language learning, creativity, and technology, was particularly remarkable.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project exemplifies how art can be a powerful medium for learning French, <\/strong>even for beginners, by creating an immersive and motivating environment where the language comes alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Collective Success Applauded by All<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The play received unanimous acclaim from audiences and institutional partners.<\/strong> The French Office in Taipei praised the relevance of its theme ) – youth interactions with AI – and the boldness of incorporating three languages on stage. Beyond the performance, the project demonstrated the possibility of merging disciplines as diverse as photonics, arts, and humanities to create a collective, multicultural work.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The participants themselves expressed enthusiasm for this human and creative adventure, declaring they would seize the opportunity to relive the experience without hesitation! Some even plan to take the project further: one student envisions translating the play into Hakka, a Taiwanese local language, continuing the mission of cultural exchange.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
